THIS WEEK ON A SMALL VOICE PODCAST EPISODE...
My guest this week on the podcast is Scottish photographer and director Robbie Lawrence who talks about his relationship to painting and writing, how working commercially can be a ‘relief’, his ‘macrojournalistic approach’, the difference between myth and history, working digitally, his latest book, Long Walk Home, and why he discarded three years of work in the process of making it.
Full bio and show notes for the episode here.
ALSO THIS WEEK...
Forthcoming podcast special:
Just got back from a gloriously warm and sunny weekend at the Unseen Photo Fair in Amsterdam so listen out for a podcast special episode from that event coming soon on A Small Voice.
Documentary Screenings:
The beautiful new documentary feature film, Mother Vera, co-directed by friend of the podcast Alys Tomlinson (Ep. 123) and Cécile Embleton has its UK premiere at the London Film Festival in October as part of the Grierson Documentary Award. Both these events have sold out already, but keep an eye on the website for info on forthcoming screenings.
Substack account I just discovered:
Ukrainian-born, NYC-raised professional photographer Dina LIvotsky has a thoughtful and very entertaining Substack newsletter entitled In The Flash which you might want to check out. Particularly enjoyed her amusing, well argued and contentious post Photography's Phallic Stage or Why Photographers Should Stop Calling Themselves "Artists".
Photo Festival This weekend:
Flakphoto's Andy Adams has helped to organise the Photomidwest Festival in Madison, Wisconsin opening this weekend, September 27th-28th. Go check it out if you're in that area!
